The Ancient Urquhart Tartan |
|
The name Cromarty or Cromartie seems to have derived from a John Urquhart who left the town of Cromarty at the tip of the Black Isle around 1450 and re-settled near St Margaret's Hope on South Ronaldsay, Orkney. There he was known as John O'Cromarty, which later became John Cromarty. Because of our Urquhart connections we should wear the Urquhart tartan, of which there are several. The one chosen for this website is known as 'Ancient Urquhart.' The colours are softer than the 'Modern Urquhart' and they reflect the colours of both the Black Isle and Orkney - the rolling green hills and the surrounding blue of the firths. The red represents the 'Crimson Thread of Kinship' which we all share. So, if you would like to choose one tartan to reflect both your Urquhart and Cromarty connections, may I suggest the Ancient Urquhart. It is a very attractive tartan, looks good as both a kilt or straight skirt and is also available as ties, scarves and sashes.
