A Warm Welcome to all Cromarty & Cromartie 'Cousins' Around the World

John Cromartie (01-1)

Shown in the Earldom of Orkney records as having purchased a property called Garay on August 24, 1479.  It is estimated he was born around 1450.

We know nothing about this man, except, to quote the noted Orcadian historian, J. Storer Clouston,  the family was of good position when they first appeared in the far north.  Evidently, the family dropped its original surname and took the name of the place whence they came.

Now, the one family who reigned as lords and hereditary sheriffs of the then small district of Cromarty were the Urquharts of Cromarty, and their arms were three boars heads.  That the Cromartys were originally Urquharts seems to follow as at least a highly probable inference.”

He had a son, Magnus (02-1).
