The Cromarty/Cromartie Family Tree |

Because we seem to be all related, I consider that there is only one family tree, but obviously there are many, many branches all over the world. My genealogy work was done by Mrs Nila McCallum from Orkney Roots Research. I can recommend her if you want to also have work done as she is familiar with the Cromartys and has also assisted several others with their own research. I am fortunate in that my line was the one that purchased land at South Walls on Hoy, thus providing a link between the original South Ronaldsay community and the South Walls Cromartys. I am also fortunate that there are records showing the marriage of William C and Christina Fidler on South Walls, the birth of their sons in Caithness and a record showing the marriage of William in Australia. This provides me with a tree which covers the current generation right back to 1540. Below is the basic structure of the 'tree'. There are two reference numbers under each name (or there will be when I have finished writing everything up). I have started with John Cromartie (01-1) who is shown in the Earldom of Orkney Records as having purchased a property called 'Garay' on South Ronaldsay, Orkney, on August 24, 1479. The second reference number indicates from whom, in the previous generation, that person descended. For example, Christen Cromartie on line 4 has the reference number 04-1 and descends from John Cromartie whose reference number is 03-1. There is no particular significance to the actual numbering on each generation line, so I can add new lines as I find them. Generation 10 covers several lines to allow for information on all people. This can be done with other generations if necessary. Interestingly, James (10-14) and Elspet (10-15) married one another. I have not included 'Cromarty/Cromartie' in the name as it just adds unnecessarily to the total size of the tree structure. Where the name has a link, I have provided what additional information I have. I have respected the privacy of more recent generations, but if you have a genuine enquiry regarding someone on the tree, please contact me and I'll help if I can.
